Do I have to move out when I am 18?
During your placement, you will be supported to learn the skills you need live independently. However, there may be some circumstances where you need support post 18. This may be remaining in placement a little longer, or having outreach support in your own property. There is an expectation that you engage in this support. Any extension to placement will need to be discussed and agreed with your social worker. You are in control at every stage of your placement and progression.
What do I need to bring to my property?
All our properties are fully furnished including bedroom, and living room furniture, curtains and blinds, and all kitchen appliances and equipment. We also provide one set of bedding and towels. We encourage you to bring any items you want to bring to personalise your space, such as pictures, ornaments, and soft furnishings. If you have any of your own furniture, we can store ours, so you are able to use your own.
What will staff support me with?
We will always tailor our support to what you need. It may be that you have some skills, but not others, so this will be discussed with you, so we know what support you need. Some of the things that staff will support you with are cooking, cleaning, laundry, budgeting, shopping, booking and attending appointments, signposting to other support services (such as mental health, substance misuse), and getting into education, training, or employment.
Will I have my own space?
We have various different properties, including self-contained flats, and shared houses. In our flats, you would have your own bedroom, lounge, bathroom, and kitchen. In our shared houses, you would have your own bedroom (this will have a lock), and you would share the kitchen, bathroom, and lounge. Staff will always respect your personal space.
What money would I have to live on?
You will be allocated a weekly allowance which will either be paid by the local authority or though you claiming Universal Credit. The amount would be the same. We help and encourage all our young people to look for paid work or access education bursaries when in full-time education to top up their income.
Can I have visitors?
We encourage our residents to have visitors in their own properties. You will be given a welcome booklet on arrival which details your expectations in regard to visitors.
Can my visitors stay overnight?
The short answer is yes. However, for the first couple of weeks of placement, we want you to settle in and get to know the staff team, so visitors will only be considered for staying overnight after this period, and at the agreement of our service and your social worker.
Can I stay out overnight?
Residents can stay out overnight. However, this is dependent on agreement from our service and your social worker. The more information you provide, and the more time we have to plan this, increases the likelihood of overnight stays being agreed.
